“A graduation ceremony is an event where the commencement speaker tells thousands of students dressed in identical caps and gowns that “individuality” is the key to success.”
― Robert Orben
Cara’s college graduation, May 7, 2011, at the University of Indianapolis.
It’s so true — individuality vs. conformity. How do we fit in our surroundings? How do we navigate our differences? When my son graduated from High School, he transformed his graduation cap into a top hat so he could fit his iPod and a small speaker beneath it which allowed him to listen to music during the ceremony. He also added paper “goat ears” to the top hat (I drew them for him). The best part was, the cap decorating was encouraged by the school and student body, and his was among the most admired for its creativity. 🙂

That is interesting. I’m not sure if that is done around here or not. I have not seen that at our school before!

It’s still a wonderful moment though, especially for parents!

1 out of 6 out of college; 3 out of 6 out of high school. We still have a way to go before we are finished!
