Although the orphanages we visited in China operated on a shoe-string budget, each always managed to stress basic education skills. These learning sheets hung on the doors in Laci’s living area at the old orphanage in Hefei, Anhui Province. Learning Chinese is no easy task – I have worked on it with a little success, but not too much! I DO know that the first ten characters on the ‘Characters’ sheet are the numbers 1 through 10! I can also pronounce them reasonably correct and without my Hoosier accent.

The grammar is very much different than English. I have only dabbled in speaking and not in writing. And I still struggle, but mostly because I don’t have any speakers to talk with. I am into German now – we have an opportunity for a trip next year and I would am looking for a bit of language familiarity before we go! Plus my oldest daughter majored in German in college, so I have someone to bounce my language skills(?) off of.

I tried Russian and that was difficult, but Chinese is a LOT more difficult than that.

I know a few phrases in Mandarin, but I have no one to speak with for practice. I am now into learning German and my daughter was a German Language major, so at least she can help me out some there!

We have five girls adopted from China ranging in age from 3 to 7 at the time of adoption. They each learned English almost overnight. It was phenomenal to watch.
